Born in 1971, Peter Kimani is a practising journalist and columnist in Kenya’s vibrant national press.

Peter KimaniA holder of a Master's degree in International Journalism from City University, London, he has taught at college level and published journalistic work abroad, including OpenDemocracy.net and The Guardian of London.

His first novel, Before the Rooster Crows, was published by the East African Educational Publishers in 2002 and appears on the Kenya Institute of Education’s list of recommended reading, so it’s widely studied in Kenyan secondary schools and colleges.

His latest book, Upside Down (Oxford University Press, 2009), is a children’s novel exploring post-election turmoil from the perspective of a young girl.
Kimani won the University of Iowa’s International Writing Fellowship (2007); CNN African Journalist of the Year Award special commendation (2005); the Common Counsel Foundation Award (to attend the annual international writers' residency programme) in northern California (1999) and the Okoth K'Obonyo Playwriting Merit Award for his play, The Life of My Choice (1994).

A consummate poet, he contributed verse to New Poetry from Kenya (French Cultural Centre, 1995) and was one of the three international poets commissioned by BBC USA to compose and present poems during Barack Obama’s inauguration as US President in January 2009, which can be downloaded here
