![]() Professor Ngugi wa Thiong'o delivered three landmark lectures at the University of Nairobi from Monday, 15th January 2007, to Wednesday 18 th January 2007. The lectures, which were attended by people from diverse cultures, beliefs and occupations, could aptly be summed up as a call for all to go back to their roots. They were first delivered as McMillan Stewart Lectures at Harvard from March 14 to March 16, 2006. The Nairobi University lectures were delivered under the title Re-Membering Africa: Burial and Resurrection of African Memory in three days. The first phase was entitled Dis- Membering Practices: Planting European Memory in Africa in which he elaborated how the norms and moral imperatives of the African society were eroded by the European imperial efforts. The second phase was on Re-Membering Visions: Raising African Memory from the Dead. This phase was essentially on strategies of giving back to Africa her lost spine, what some would call a cultural renaissance for Africa. The final phase was on the Remembering Process, which also touched on Memory, Restoration and African Renaissance. In a word, the lectures were a call for dismembering all the colonial practices and embarking on the process of Re-Membering Africa.
Attentive:The audience at the University of Nairobi's Taifa Hall during Ngugi wa Thiongo's lecture. People from all walks of life thronged the hall. |
