Exiled writer Ngugi wa Miiri Passes on |
The late author and theatre enthusiast escaped into exile in Zimbabwe in 1982, following a warrant for his arrest issued by the Special Branch during the Moi era. The dreaded Special Branch went after him for being associated with the Kamirithu Community Education Cultural Center, a peasants' theatre movement that used cultural art for political sensitization. His escape was facilitated by his publisher, now the EAEP Chairman, Dr. Henry Chakava, who helped him hide and get to the airport. Once at the airport, Ngugi managed to secure an escape into exile. |

Ngahiika Ndeeda (I will Marry When I Want) deals with the issue of neocolonialism and how the promises made at independence turned into a nightmare for the common mwananchi, who continued to suffer in the hands of the new African ruling elite. A letter sent to the Chairman of the Kamirithu Theatre group in December 1976 by the then Kiambu District Commissioner indicated that the play was a threat to ‘public security'. During his stay in Zimbabwe, Ngugi wa Miiri joined the Zimbabwe Foundation for Education. He later founded the Zimbabwe Association of Community Theatre, whose core business was training of thespians. He was a founder of Visions of Africa and the Southern Africa Theatre Initiative, a successor to the Southern African Performing Arts Network. He was also an editor and publisher with the Kimathi Publishing House and director of the KenZim Cultural Center. Apart from the play Ngaahika Ndeeda, which brought him into literary limelight, he has also written more than 30 plays on a wide range of topics including history, relationships, environmental issues, land reforms, gender violence and HIV and AIDS; according to the Herald Newspaper in Zimbabwe. He will be buried on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at his home in Limuru. A funeral service will be held at the Ngarariga Catholic Church on the same day. He leaves behind his widow Wairimu, who is also an artist, two daughters and a granddaughter.
