New Set books for Kenyan Secondary Schools

  NEW READERS

Ngugi wa Thiong'o's The River Between and Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People have been selected as literature set books in the secondary school syllabus in Kenya.

The two E.A.E.P-published books are among the English and Swahili works of literary art that the Ministry of Education recently approved to be studied in schools come the year 2008.

The selection takes place after every four years and the books selected are used to teach literary appreciation skills to Form Three and Form Four high school students.

The secondary school Literature and Fasihi (literature in Swahili) syllabi are each divided into three categories – the novel, drama and short stories. The ministry selects only one compulsory book in each of the three categories.
Both an Enemy of the People (the 2007 EAEP edition) and The River Between (revised 2007 EAEP school edition) have been approved as compulsory set texts.

Written towards the end of the nineteenth century in the Norwegian language, An Enemy of the People revolves around Dr. Stockmann, a medical doctor who brushes the whole of his home town the wrong way when he reveals that the baths project being overseen by a respected council is a potential source of disease and contamination. The play explores political and environmental issues in the Norwegian society of the 1880's in a manner that captures the true state of affairs in any society of the modern world. The play peels the reader's eye to the hypocritical underbelly of the modern society and how truth and integrity are trampled underfoot in the name of democracy. Ibsen's play will appeal to general readers as well.

The book is NOW available online, at Ksh. 265. Click here to purchase a copy.

The River Between is the story of a society caught on the horns of a
cultural dilemma. Through the protagonist, Waiyaki, a typical African elite at the onset of missionary teaching, the reader is taken through the pangs of conflict that come with change. While the new ways are equated with progress, the folk customs are so strong that they threaten to destroy whoever defies them. Not only is this African Classic one of the best works by Ngugi wa Thiong'o, it provides invaluable insight into the dynamics of cultural change in any society. The new edition of this book is NOW available online, at Ksh. 375.
