ONDUKO Bw'ATEBE
“It was almost Christmas and I was suddenly jobless. A 35-year-old father of two, just starting life. And jobless. I was at sea in a sail-less dhow. Then a lazy thought wormed in my mind. I was going to be a writer… But what do I write about? I asked myself, immediately finding myself in a quandary once more. I sat down to deeply ponder on what to write about. A blank page is always scaring, and what a relief it was when I finally penned down the first line. The two vehicles sped down the flat stretch, the engines wailing, and tyres whining on the hot tarmac… I watched with amazement as the first sentence turned into a paragraph, and then into a chapter, upon another, until finally there was the last full stop. The manuscript of The Verdict of Death had finally come to be! I had become an author! My excitement knew no bounds! Then came the hard part: looking for a publisher. Armed with my three hundred or so pages of handwritten script, neatly stashed away in a manila document folder, I breezed from publishing house to another, my hopes high, feeling on top of the world, only to be brought crashing back to earth at the reception desk. Becoming a published author was fast becoming a huge boulder I had to push uphill. But I was determined to make it. On the verge of despair, I walked into the EAEP offices where I was ushered into the publishing manager's office. “How are you, sir,” I was greeted respectfully. I had just trekked over 10 kilometres, from Komarock estate. My shoes were dusty. I could smell my own sweat. I just couldn't pass for “sir”. I looked at the publishing manager, searching for any sign of mischief. There was none. The countenance was genuinely respectful. I felt tears sting my eyes. And, right there and then, I knew I had found my publisher. I beamed a smile and responded: “I am fine, thank you.” |
